P&G Asia Gains Top Recognition at 2012 Global CSR Awards

Thursday, May 10, 2012 10:51 am EDT

Last month, P&G Asia claimed two coveted awards at the 2012 Global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards held in Boracay, Phillippines, emerging as one of the most-awarded companies at the event.

P&G Asia clinched its first ever Gold award under the Best Community Program Award category for P&G Japan, Thailand and Philippines Disaster Relief Operations and received a Silver award under the Product Excellence Award category for P&G Purifier of Water for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program. More than 80 top global organizations were considered for the award.

The Gold Award for Best Community Program was given for the comprehensive aid the Japan, Thailand and Philippine Operations mobilized during the Japan Tsunami, Thailand Floods and Philippine Super Typhoons.

Japan

In March 2011, a massive earthquake caused the greatest calamity to occur in Japan since World War II. In a comprehensive effort by P&G Japan, more than 800 employees worked together to collect money and donate products. The brands also held specialized efforts to cater to the needs of those affected by the tsunami:

  • Ariel Cheers for You: Ariel provided free laundry service for families in evacuation centers;
  • Pampers Peaceful Sleep, Playful Days: Pampers provided mobile “daycare centers” for moms and babies to play and bond near the evacuation centers;
  • P&G Employees created and packed 6,700 product gift sets for evacuation centers; and
  • P&G Employees coordinated a clean-up rescue volunteer trip to clean away the debris and refuse.

Thailand

When floods swept through Thailand in 2011, P&G began working with humanitarian and retail partners to distribute water purification packets and educate communities on how to quickly purify water through the CSDW. The packets contain a powdered water-purifying technology developed by P&G and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to help reduce sickness and death in developing countries resulting from drinking contaminated water. One small packet quickly turns 10 liters of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean, drinkable water.

Despite transportation difficulties and destroyed infrastructure, P&G and its CSDW partners have shared more than 25 million liters of clean drinking water with more than 50,000 families affected by the floods in Thailand.

Philippines

Since Typhoon Sendong hit Southern Philippines in December 2011, P&G Philippines has donated 600,000 sachets of PUR Water Purifier to provide 6,000,000 Liters of Clean, Safe Drinking Water – a critical need in evacuation areas housing thousands of displaced people. P&G shipped Tide, Ariel and Mr. Clean to help the victims recover, through our partner organizations such as the Philippine Red Cross, the GMA Kapuso Foundation, ABS CBN Sagip Kapamilya, TV5 Foundation and World Vision. Because many evacuees sought shelter in schools, P&G worked with UNICEF on a project to provide critically needed water sanitation facilities to 10 schools.

Global CSR Awards

Established in 2009, the annual Global CSR Awards are one of the region’s most prestigious recognition awards program for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Commenting on P&G’s double win at the awards ceremony, Erik Jonnaert, Vice-President Asia External Relations said“As P&G continues to accelerate its growth in Asia, it is important that we also continue investing in the communities in which we operating using our CSR programs to touch and improve lives . These awards pay tribute to the many P&G employees who have been personally involved through volunteering in our disaster relief programs. Is also rewarding to see the recognition for P&G’s water purifier as a model of purpose inspired innovation.”
