‘InsideCounsel’ Names P&G Legal Team One of 10 Most Innovative In The United States

Providing legal counsel and support to a global company with $84 billion in sales and operations in approximately 75 countries worldwide is, by nature, a complex endeavor.

Over the past two years, P&G’s Legal team of more than 500 lawyers and legal professionals has worked to make the job a little less complex. They introduced an effort called “Legal Renewal,” a strategic organization renewal process designed to better position the Global Legal Division to meet the Company’s legal needs well into the future.

The changes helped the Legal Department earn InsideCounsel Magazine’s “IP10” award as one of the 10 most innovative legal departments in the United States. The award is featured in the magazine’s September edition, which can be found at: http://www.insidecounsel.com/

The IC10 Awards shine a spotlight on departments that find new ways to adapt to some of the most pressing problems facing law departments. This includes innovative strategies for managing legal vendors, increasing diversity, cutting costs, using technology and more.

“This reward reflects the work we have done on Legal Renewal – the creative ways our team has balanced the need to be global and local, business-connected and legally expert, simplified in a complex environment, all while addressing work-life effectiveness,” said Debbie Majoras, P&G’s Chief Legal Officer (shown in photo).

Supporting the Business More Seamlessly

With Legal Renewal, P&G’s Legal Division has formed a more global, seamless organization that better supports the business as an indispensable partner. For example: Previously, a business that wanted to get a new product to market would individually consult patent lawyers, trademark lawyers, advertising claims lawyers, etc. Under the new structure, legal experts in each area work in teams, forming a holistic legal plan to get the product from the lab to the shelf. The department also has formed more geographic clusters and global teams of experts on emerging issues, like digital media.

P&G’s Legal department provides expertise and judgment to business partners all over the world across a range of areas including intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, antitrust, privacy, environmental, securities, labor and employment, and corporate governance and compliance.
