The Secret of Stress Sweat... And How You Can Fight It

We’ve all been there. You’re running late for an important appointment, stuck in traffic before a job interview, or are giving the biggest presentation of your career. You are wearing deodorant, but somehow still manage to start sweating. Then, when you realize you are sweating, you stress out about it and sweat some more. And, to make matters worse, this sweat smells worse than usual.

Women told us they want to feel dry, odor-free and fearless. So, what’s the ‘secret’ to giving women what they want? It begins with science.

Gaining Insights into How Women Sweat

There are actually three causes of sweat: heat, movement (like working out) and stress. The sweat that results from heat and movement comes from a specific sweat gland called the eccrine gland. It’s made up almost entirely of water, so the sweat produced is clear and mostly water.

The sweat that results from stress comes from a different gland, called the apocrine gland. This sweat gland is larger and more concentrated with 25x the nutrients for bacteria. The increased nutrients and bacteria cause stress sweat to actually smell worse than any other kind of sweat.

We discovered that women can sweat, on average, 30 times more when stressed.

Putting Secret Clinical Strength to the Test

To date, the industry standard for measuring the performance of an anti-perspirant/deodorant is known as the ‘hot room.’ This is effective at measuring product performance for heat and movement-induced sweat, but really can’t measure stress sweat.

We decided to put our strongest formula, Clinical Strength, to the test in an innovative new clinical study: participants were asked to give impromptu public speeches or run through complicated mental math problems, while a team of professionals monitored their vital signs and stress levels.

Delivering Superior Performance

Secret Clinical Strength is the only proven deodorant that fights all three causes of sweat – including the worst smelling kind, stress sweat. And it was proven four times more effective at protecting against stress-induced underarm wetness than the wetness protection required of an ordinary antiperspirant. Our patented Betacyclodestrin (BCD) technology uses odor-neutralizing molecules to trap odor, lock it away and then replace the odor with a fresh scent to keep you smelling clean and fresh. This is especially important for stress sweat: since the odor is stronger, attempting to simply cover it up with fragrance can make it smell worse.

This ‘secret’ to combating sweat seems to be spreading! Today, Secret Clinical Strength Stress Response is the #1 anti-perspirant/deodorant launch in the category for the year.
